Possum on Campus

I got off the bus in front of the Cofrin Library. As I was walking toward the Union, I noticed a large creature in front of me on the lawn. My first reaction was a squirrel, but soon realized the creature was too big to be one. I followed it to a nearby tree. As I got closer I realized it was a possum.

'Tis the Season

Christmas is one of those holiday seasons that brings out in the kid in everyone. ‘Tis the Season had something for everyone. There were several craft tables with volunteers from student organizations on campus, hot chocolate and cookies, face painting and pictures with Santa. ‘Tis the Season was in the University Union Dec. 10.

Asking Alexandria

Asking Alexandria, a British metalcore band, played Dec. 6 at the Resch Center. The band is on tour with Black Veil Brides, Avenged Sevenfold and Hollywood Undead.

Asking Alexandria consist of Ben Bruce, lead guitar, Danny Worsnop, vocals, Cameron Liddell, rhythm guitar, Sam Bettley, bass guitar, and James Cassells, drums.

UW-Green Bay Budget Rally

On Nov. 15 students, alumni and guests gathered in the University Union guest parking lot on UW-Green Bay's campus to rally against the potential $65 million budget cut.

Students and alumni took turns speaking their mind on the subject. Concerns included the loss of great professors due to an increase in retirement, a decrease in the amount of minority students on campus, student loan debt and much more.

One student proclaimed that the cuts are a personal attack on students' futures.

Students were encouraged to sign numerous recall petitions that will be circulating campus this week.

Decked: Three Decades of Skateboard Decks

“Decked: Three Decades of Skateboard Decks,” is currently featured at the Lawton Gallery. The show features 117 skateboard decks from several collections. The decks originate from the 1970s to the late 1990s. Aaron Polansky, a guest curator, describes the uniqueness of each board. Not only is each board a work of art, but also each have unique wear from doing tricks and stunts.

Road Trip to Door County

     Door county is full of beautiful scenery and interesting communities. Some friends and me decided to take a day road trip to Door county and just explore. We had no agenda, a full tank of gas, a GPS and an open mind. Many of the small towns we drove through were busy with fall festivals.
     Our first stop was at Peninsula State Park for an hour and it cost us $5 for all four of us. The scenery was beautiful with the leaves changing and the surrounding water. Some of the stops we made at the park were to see the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse and the Eagle Tower. The tower is 225 feet from the water.
     Our next stop was for lunch at the Sister Bay Café, a Norwegian restaurant, in Sister Bay. The café was a small family restaurant on the water that might have been able to seat about 30 customers. We waited five minutes for our food and it was delicious. I had a local fish sandwich with a side of fruit for $10.
     From there we drove to Northport, which is located at the tip of the peninsula, and got on a ferry. We rode the ferry to Washington Island for $12. At the Welcome Center we met a woman named Joyce that gave us directions to town. After two miles in to our walk to town, Joyce stopped to pick us up. She showed us around the island and told us information we would have never heard if we were to go on a standard tour.
     We rode the ferry back and headed home and the trip was worth every penny. The day did not go how we thought it would when we got in to the car that morning and that was okay with us. We met interesting people, made unforgettable memories and had enough laughs to last a lifetime.

Chromatopia

Chromatopia

Featured in the Lawton Gallery in Theater Hall on campus, Chromatopia features current work of multi-media artist Michael Velliquette from Madison.

These brightly colored pieces are made mainly of paper, and are embellished with mirrors. Viewers relate the work to many different cultural movements, from Columbian to Native American to Asian art. Although this was not Michael’s intention, he believes it enforces the pieces’ spiritual content. The entire show was inspired by his visit to a studio that focuses on the alchemy of words and phrases, transforming them into symbols.

De Pere Fall Fest 2011

Yesterday De Pere had it's annual Fall Fest in downtown East De Pere on Front Street. Delicious food and drinks were available, such as barbecue ribs, Texas toast grilled cheese sandwiches, mac and cheese, various wines, sangrias, martinis and more.

Verona Grove and Hot Chelle Rae Perform at UWGB

Verona Grove and Hot Chelle Rae put on a free show at UW-Green Bay Monday, Sept. 6. It was the night before classes started, but that didn't stop students from making their way to Mac Hall Circle and having a good time. The concert lasted a good two hours. Hot Chelle Rae invited students on stage to dance along as they played. Verona Grove played hits like "Las Vegas Nights" and "Revolution." Hot Chelle Rae played the well known "Tonight, Tonight" and "Bleed."

Heritage Hill

The Fourth Estate is doing an article previewing the Heritage Hill Festival, which will take place on Sept. 11, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 4e photographer Whitney Robertson took some great photographs of the historical park that are displayed below. Her photos will also be in our first issue as well as on the Fourth Estate website.

Below is a description of the event from their website (http://www.heritagehillgb.org/):

"Heritage Festival is a celebration of the various heritages of the 19th century immigrants who came to Wisconsin. These settlers celebrated the harvest with various festivals that incorporated parades, music, dancing and food. Some of the nationalities represented will be: Belgian, Polish, and German.

Visitors will enjoy interactive activities in each of the historic buildings with our interpretative staff. Other demonstrations such as making butter, cheese making, beer making, quilting, music from the Clete Bellin Polka Band and various other activities will also be going on throughout the day."

Contemporary Portraiture

During my Photo II class about a year and a half ago I remember telling my teacher that I disliked photographing people. I remembered the sort of quizzical look she gave me after I said it. The truth was, I had never really tried it, and the idea of organizing people in the frame intimidated me and sounded a little boring. At that point I was captivated by nature. What did people have to offer me? How wrong I was.

I shot 5 rolls of film-36 frames a piece of my boyfriend. Bossing him around was a piece of cake, and he had a natural look about him so the shots didn't look staged. I wound up getting about 4 shots I liked and then I went back to my comfort zone, nature photography. In Photo III, I became a bit bored of all the landscapes, pretty flowers and trees. It was no longer a challenge. So I decided to photograph my friend Elizabeth. I wanted the background of the photo to hold as much weight as the person in it, and it had to go beyond the cliche senior picture. At first I was inspired by Anna Gaskell and Jessica Todd Harper.

After that shoot I was hooked. I loved how you can tell a story about an individual with photographs, how the emotion is raw on the subject's face. Elizabeth is a complex, confident person, and I believe she is shown that way in my photographs of her. Cassie is playful, helpful, and deep, and I believe that shines through as well.

Recently I came across a photographer who I am absolutely in love with- Andrew Hefter. He really captures people in a delicate and soft manner. The relationships he makes between the subject and the background are incredible. He mixes in graphics in some of his images and they take the photographs to a whole new level, sort of mystical in a sense. It's hard to believe he's only 21 and is relatively new to photography. Looking at his images definitely gives me inspiration when I'm shooting portraiture.

I was born in California and spent most of my early childhood there. I moved to Wisconsin when I was 10 years old. Wisconsin's bitter cold winters always bothered me. I was used to wearing a light jacket in December and walking to the bus stop with my mother in the rain, not falling on iced sidewalks and shoveling my driveway. Wisconsin summers and falls amaze me with their beauty. The vibrant colors, different animals and acres of farmable land captivate me. I set out to do a photo project in my photo III class last year that I am still working on it. I visited different farms and stopped on the sides of highways and roads and photographed the things that stand out to me when I am driving or walking around on a typical day in Wisconsin.

39th Annual Oneida Nation POW WOW

On the Fourth of July I photographed the Oneida POW WOW for my internship at the Kalihwisaks newspaper. All different age groups were competing for cash prizes and titles. Indian tacos made on fry bread were among the many different dishes offered and Native art was available for purchase. The dancers displayed tremendous dedication- not one of them seemed fazed by the humid summer heat in their layers of beautiful, colorful attire.
